WBAI, part of the Pacifica Radio Network, a 53 year listener sponsored radio station may go dark if they don't raise $500,000 dollars by the end of March. The money is to pay the rent for their transmitter on top of the Empire State building and fund the operation of station.

Hurricane Sandy interrupted BAI's Winter Fund drive, a major source of their revenue and has left them in dire need. Even after the storm WBAI could not go back to business as usually because the building where the station was located suffered major flooding which resulted in the phone lines being down.

WBAI is located at 99.5FM which is in the middle of the FM dial. Their 50,000 watt transmitter broadcast 90 miles in all directions which covers New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and parts of Pennsylvania. WBAI is a progressive and independent voice in the media airwaves that are populated by corporate sponsored radio and TV stations.

All the corporate media reports the same narrow groups of stories with only difference being a conservative or liberal slant. Major news stories about the US Government domestic spying programs, the erosion of civil liberties under the current administration or the fact that nuclear power is neither clean or safe are completely ignored. Journalism and reporting of information have been replaced by opinion and propaganda leading us from one conflict to the next while ignore the issues that effect every American and person who lives on this planet. In the era of media consolidation an independent voice that not beholden to corporate interests are too few and far between.

So please support WBAI by donating whatever you can. Every 5, 10, 25 or 100 dollar donation makes a difference. You can pledge you support by calling 516-620-3602 and saying you are donating to the 'Transmitter Fund' or go to and donate there. Even if you cannot afford to donate at this time, please pass on the word and let people know about this valuable institution that we can't afford to lose.
